Talking Therapy

Counselling

It can be confusing that the word ‘counselling’ is often used interchangeably with ‘psychotherapy’.  However, counselling is generally more associated with present day specific current challenges, while psychotherapy involves a deeper, long-term exploration of past-originating and chronic psychological difficulties.  Sometimes the world ‘counselling’ is used as an umbrella term for talking therapies generally.

Counselling is also usually associated with ‘person-centred counselling’ developed by psychologist, Carl Rogers.  He used decades of research and experience to conclude that we all have the innate ability to develop, grow and find our way through the maze of life, when offered the right conditions.  He believed that these changes can be facilitated by the 'therapeutic relationship', offered by a therapist or counsellor, a relationship that is safe, empathic, confidential, and non-judgmental.

Beginning therapy can be a big step towards being the healthiest version of yourself and living the best life possible. Through therapy, you can change self-destructive behaviours and habits, resolve painful feelings, improve your relationships, develop a better sense of wellbeing, and find different and more fulfilling ways to live your life.
